Tarangire National Park

Overview

Home of the Giants

Tarangire National Park is a breathtaking showcase of Africa’s wild beauty, where vast savannas are dotted with towering baobab trees and northern Tanzania’s largest elephant herds roam freely. During the dry season, from August to October, life flourishes as migratory animals return to the permanent waters of the Tarangire River, creating one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife gatherings. Covering 2,850 square kilometers within a larger 30,000 sq. km ecosystem in the Maasai Steppe, Tarangire is a must-visit for safari lovers seeking open landscapes, acacia-studded plains, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. The park’s diverse habitats, including woodlands, wetlands, and seasonal floodplains, also make it a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting an incredible variety of species.

Wildlife

Tarangire National Park is a wildlife paradise, second only to Ngorongoro Crater in large animal density during the dry season. Massive herds of elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes gather around the Tarangire River and Silale Swamp, while lions and leopards roam the savanna. Rare species like oryx, gerenuk, and kudu can also be spotted, along with an incredible variety of birds, including martial and bateleur eagles. Towering baobab trees provide shelter for small mammals like genet and civet cats and serve as pollination hubs for fruit bats. A safari in Tarangire offers an unforgettable experience, from thrilling wildlife encounters to serene moments watching nature unfold at a waterhole.

When to Visit

Tarangire National Park is a year-round safari destination, with each season offering a unique experience. The dry season (June–October) is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around the Tarangire River, the park’s main water source. During the green season, the landscape transforms, bringing newborn animals and vibrant birdlife, making it a paradise for nature lovers. However, from April to May, some animals migrate out due to the park’s black cotton soil, which becomes difficult for their hooves.
